Press Release

October 2, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Communities across Wyoming are invited to apply for funding to help create and deliver activities surrounding the upcoming celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday!
The Wyoming Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (WALBC) recently announced that a Community Activities Grant Program has been developed to provide financial assistance to chapters of the Wyoming State Historical Society, schools, arts organizations, chambers of commerce and other organizations in developing activities relating to the Lincoln Bicentennial celebration. Funds may be used for exhibitions and other public programs, brochures and other Bicentennial related activities. According to WALBC chair, Rick Ewig, these grant funds are available for short-term, rather than continuing or multi-year projects. There will be only one grant cycle commencing on or before February 12, 2009. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2008, with a maximum of $1,000 available.
It is recommended that applicants review the national website for ideas on how to celebrate this event. For more details go to www.lincolnbicentennial.gov and click on “The Bicentennial.” There you will find links titled “Get Involved in Your Community” and “Community Wide Celebrations.” You can also examine the links “For Kids” and “Community Projects.” The WALBC hopes you will examine and explore the significance of Abraham Lincoln within the context of his time, but is not averse to exploring the meaning of his life, words and actions to contemporary American life.
The purpose of the WALBC is to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The mission of the WALBC is to emphasize the contribution of Lincoln’s thoughts and ideals to America, the world and Wyoming, and to serve as a catalyst for bringing freedom, democracy and equal opportunity to all. Additionally, the WALBC will emphasize Lincoln’s role in shaping Wyoming as a territory and state.
